Artwork & Copyright
The work presented on this website represents many hours of drawing, observation and development. I am pleased for people to view, share and engage with my work, but the publication of an image online does not place that work in the public domain or grant an unrestricted right to reproduce or reuse it.
This page sets out how artwork by Nathaniel Cooper / NJC Illustration may, and may not, be used.
Copyright
Unless expressly stated otherwise, all original illustrations, drawings, artworks, studies, photographs of artwork and other original creative material displayed on this website are protected by copyright and remain the intellectual property of Nathaniel Cooper, trading as NJC Illustration.
Copyright protection exists independently of whether a copyright symbol or notice appears alongside an individual work.
© Nathaniel Cooper / NJC Illustration. All rights reserved.
Ownership of original artwork
Purchasing an original drawing, illustration, print or other physical artwork means that you own that physical object.
It does not transfer the copyright, reproduction rights or other intellectual property rights associated with the artwork.
Unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing, those rights remain with Nathaniel Cooper / NJC Illustration.
Commissioned work
Commissioning an illustration does not automatically transfer ownership of the copyright.
A commission may include a licence allowing the client to use the artwork for particular agreed purposes, media, territories or periods of time. The precise scope of that licence will depend upon the individual commission and the terms agreed between the client and NJC Illustration.
Any use outside the agreed licence may require further permission and, where appropriate, an additional licensing fee.
Copyright will only be assigned or transferred where this has been expressly agreed in a written and signed agreement.
Reproduction and commercial use
Unless you have received prior written permission, artwork from this website may not be:
reproduced or copied for commercial purposes;
printed on products, merchandise, packaging or promotional material;
used in advertising, publishing, branding or marketing;
incorporated into another commercial design or creative work;
offered for sale, licensed, sublicensed or distributed;
uploaded to stock-image, asset, dataset or content libraries;
altered and presented as an authorised version of the original work; or
used in any other manner that implies endorsement, collaboration or permission where none has been given.
If you would like to license an existing illustration, please contact me to discuss the intended use.
Personal sharing
You are welcome to share links to pages on this website.
Where an artwork is shared for genuine personal, editorial or non-commercial purposes in circumstances permitted by law, I ask that the work remains unaltered and that Nathaniel Cooper / NJC Illustration is clearly credited wherever reasonably possible.
A credit does not, by itself, give permission for a use that would otherwise require a licence.
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and datasets
The availability of artwork on this website should not be interpreted as permission to use it for the development of artificial intelligence systems.
Except where expressly authorised by me, or where a particular use is permitted by applicable law and cannot lawfully be restricted, I do not grant permission for my artwork or other protected material to be:
scraped, downloaded or reproduced for the purpose of creating or expanding an AI or machine-learning dataset;
used as training, validation, testing or fine-tuning material for generative AI or machine-learning systems;
included in commercial image, text-and-image or multimodal datasets;
used to develop systems intended to imitate, reproduce or commercially exploit my work; or
supplied by one party to another for any of those purposes.
No licence for commercial AI training, machine learning or dataset creation is granted merely because material is publicly accessible through this website.
Requests to license work for technological, research or dataset-related purposes must be made separately and agreed in writing.
Automated access and scraping
Automated access to the website does not create a licence to reproduce or commercially exploit its contents.
Bots, crawlers, automated extraction systems and similar technologies must respect applicable law, technical access controls and any machine-readable rights reservations or instructions used by this website.
Where automated activity involves the copying, storing, extraction or reuse of protected material beyond what is permitted by law, prior written permission is required.
Alteration and attribution
I value the integrity of the work as well as its commercial rights.
Artwork should not be materially altered, distorted, recoloured, cropped in a misleading manner, stripped of authorship information or attributed to another person without permission, subject always to uses permitted by law.
Where my right to be identified as the creator applies and has been properly asserted, I reserve that right, together with my other moral rights under applicable copyright law.
For commissioned and licensed work, appropriate authorship and attribution provisions may also be included in the relevant written agreement.
Social media and online platforms
Posting or displaying my work on a social network, portfolio platform or other third-party service does not grant unrelated third parties permission to copy or reuse that work.
Any rights granted directly to a platform are governed by the relevant relationship and platform terms and should not be interpreted as a general licence to other users.
Please link to the original work or provide an appropriate credit where sharing is permitted.
Removal of signatures, watermarks or metadata
Copyright notices, signatures, credits, watermarks and authorship or rights-management information should not be deliberately removed in order to conceal the origin or ownership of a work.
Where an image contains identifying information, its absence from a copied version should not be interpreted as evidence that the work is free to use.
Copyright infringement
Unauthorised use of artwork may be investigated and, where appropriate, I may seek removal of the material, attribution, payment of an appropriate licence fee, compensation, or other remedies available under applicable law.
I would generally prefer to resolve genuine misunderstandings directly and proportionately, but I reserve all rights available to me in relation to unauthorised commercial exploitation or infringement.
